Can I look at plans relating to a property that I do not own (neighbour/intended purchaser)?


No, plans deposited with a local authority under the Building Regulations are not documents which the public are entitled to inspect under the Local Government Act 1972. However, with the owners written authorisation you may be able to view the plans.

Can I see the original plans of my property?


We may exercise our discretion and allow a person who has a justifiable interest in certain plans relating to their own property, to view them. However, under copyright law, copies can only be made available with the written consent of the original author.

How do I view the records relating to drainage on my property?


Please contact us and arrange for a historical search of documents. You must notify the Council in writing, via post, e-mail or fax. Details of the charge for this service can be found on our Archive Information Charges page.

Can I obtain details/information on a property via telephone?


No. You must write in via post, fax or e-mail and pay in advance. Details of the charge for this service can be found on our Archive Information Charges page.

Can I obtain a copy of Building Notice approval?


Building Notice procedure does not require the council to issue a formal decision notice. However, an acknowledgement letter is issued on receipt and on satisfactory completion of the works a completion certificate is issued. A copy of the acknowledgement letter or the Completion Certificate can be obtained following written request via post, fax or e-mail. What do I need to provide to enable viewing of plans to be arranged?


You need:
• Payment in advance where applicable
• Written request required via post, fax or e-mail
• Proof of ownership. This could be in the form of a copy of a recent utility bill
• Proof of identity - passport/driving license
• For commercial property: Authorisation on Company headed paper
• Authorisation from current legal freeholder must be obtained in all cases
• Viewing is via appointment only and is between 9am-5pm Monday to Friday

Can I obtain copy of the plans relating to my property?


Yes, providing written permission is obtained from the author of the drawings - as required by copyright laws - and payment is received in advance. Details of the charge for this service can be found on our Archive Information Charges page.

Can I obtain a copy of Building Regulation Full Plans Approval Notice and/or the Completion certificate?


Yes. Copies can be obtained by written request via post, e-mail or fax. Details of the charge for this service can be found on our Archive Information Charges page.

Do you have detailed information on works as dealt with by an Approved Inspector?


No. You must contact the relevant Approved Inspector direct for this information. Building Control can advise you on Approved Inspector details.
